Pet Life Radio’s “Super Smiley” Tapped as Spokes-Dog for The 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™

Super Smiley, the Super Hero Dog from Pet Life Radio's "A Super Smiley Adventure" has been named the new Spokes-Dog for The 2013 American Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards!

Two-time shelter dog, Super Smiley, is super smilin’ to be tapped as this year’s Official Spokes-Dog for the Hero Dog Awards, created by the American Humane Association to recognize the K9 heroes in our midst.  In addition to being a therapy dog with Pet Partners and a HOPE Animal Assisted Crisis Response Dog, Super Smiley is on a mission to help all the shelter pets get adopted!

A true game changer, he’s inspired The Super Smiley Flash Mob 4 Pet Adoption™ National Tour as his answer to the sad TV commercials for pet adoption. The Super Smiley Flash Mob, the "Happy Campaign" has inspired award-winning “Dogumentaries” that have been winning Film Festivals and sharing his message across the country. Over 50 flash mobs have energized pet adoption including flashing with the New York City’s Mayor’s Alliance for Pets; dancing on stage with the cast opening the musical Hairspray; and shimmying with the Southern CA Belly Dancers.  He’s inspired Super Smiley’s Operation Kindness, a program with inner city kids that shares the values dogs teach and crescendos with The Super Smiley Flash Mob 4 Kindness.  Super Smiley also “co-hosts” his own award-winning animal advocacy/adventure radio show, A Super Smiley Adventure, on the Pet Life Radio network.

According to Super Smiley, ”The Hero Dogs save lives and change lives!  Look down at the dog looking up at you now; and hug your personal Hero Dog.  Then remember that at shelters right now, your Hero Dog may be waiting.”

The American Humane Association is known worldwide for the famous trademarked “No Animals Were Harmed…” phrase on film and television projects.  AHA reaches millions in its efforts to protect animals.  Founded in 1877, AHA created The Hero Dog Awards to recognize the K9 heroes in our midst who save lives, provide comfort, and help those needing assistance.  Last year 3 million votes were cast for the hundreds of nominated dogs. News coverage reached over a billion people with support coming from legendary and award-winning celebrities such as Betty White, Kristin Chenoweth and Peter Fonda. This year’s show will be televised on the Hallmark Channel.

The Hero Dog Awards – Heroic K9s may be nominated up to April 30th by mail or at www.HeroDogAwards.org.   Eight finalists will be selected in the categories of: Law Enforcement/Arson Dogs, Search and Rescue, Military, Therapy, Service, Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, and Emerging Hero Dog.  The voting begins May 7.  Past winners include Military Dog, Gabe, who saved soldiers’ lives in Iraq, and Roselle, who led her blind owner, Michael Hingson, down 1,463 stairs in the burning World Trade Center.  Upon selection of the nominees, online voting begins!

Dr. Robin Ganzert, AHA President and CEO, shares she is “happy to say that because of the Hero Dog Awards, the public is paying more attention than ever before to the invaluable work done by millions of dogs every day to keep us healthy, safe and, yes, happy.”  Dr. Ganzert is making her second appearance on Pet Life Radio’s A Super Smiley Adventure at www.PetLifeRadio.com

Smiley’s person is Megan Blake, The Pet Lifestyle Coach™, from Animal Attractions TV, Pet Life Radio, and The O’Neals on the OWN network.  She and Smiley work together promoting pet adoption and keeping pets in their forever homes with The Pet Lifestyle Coach philosophy and the Super Smiley Campaigns. They recently both acted in an animal advocacy feature film, Susie’s Hope and are an official Spokes-team for the film’s message of hope and forgiveness and standing against animal abuse. They live with their “Malibu Rescue Crew,” rescued Arabian and miniature horses, Starfire and Mini HaHa, a beautiful German shepherd, Angel, and Tout Suite The Travel Kitty.  For more on Super Smiley visit www.SmileyTheDog.com and to hear the Pet Life Radio "A Super Smiley Adventure" episode with AHA President, Dr. Robin Ganzert, visit www.PetLifeRadio.com.

Megan.SusiesHope1"Susie's Hope" is a feature film based on the true life story of a NC dog who was set on fire in 2010. Susie survived and now is an inspirational spokes-dog standing against animal cruelty. Super Smiley is Super smilin' to call Susie his friend and to be in NC supporting her at the Premier.

Susie poster"Susie's Hope" is an animal advocacy film directed by Jerry Rees and starring Emmanuelle Vaugier as Donna Lawrence, Susie's real-life person. For Super Smiley and me, it was a journey of relearning and reaffirming the importance of just standing up and being present for these beautiful creatures who add so much to our lives."

'Celeb' dogs strut their stuff for adoption

Forget the Paparazzi. The pup-a-razzi was out in full force Wednesday night for a fashion show featuring dogs in need of adoption.

The Amanda Foundation came to the rescue through its second annual Patterns for Paws fundraiser at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.
Who was there? Jennifer Lo-Paws in a canine version of a J-Lo classic. Natalie Poochman was also there, as well as Brad Pit Bull.
"These dogs are available for adoption, too. So, you know, if you see an outfit you really have to have, you're going to have to take the dog with it," said Kevin Nealon, the event's host.
"Times are tough and it's hard to get people to open their wallets. When they look at these faces, it's hard to say no," said Teri Austin of the Amanda Foundation.

In Latin, "amanda" means "worthy of love," and the foundation gave a "Worthy of Love" award to actress Pauley Perrette, a 15-year supporter and volunteer.
"I started out as a volunteer, just walking dogs and cleaning cages. Then I adopted my first one and then my second one, one of our most difficult dogs we've ever had. She is brain-damaged, rescue, really badly abused and I took her home for the weekend to try to socialize her and that was 10 years ago," Perrette said. - George Pennacchio, KABC-TV/DT.

Olivia Wilde Calls Her Dog Her 'Only Boyfriend'

Olivia Wilde has made headlines lately for being spotted with a string of eligible A-list bachelors.

But the actress, 27, took to Twitter once again, denying that she and any of these famous rumored flames are relationship bound.

"Ok I know I'm not supposed to tweet sexy photos (damn you [Anthony] Wiener! [sic])," she wrote on Friday. "But here is my and my (only!) boyfriend in bed."

But Wilde's Twitter followers shouldn’t think this means that the typically private actress has suddenly decided to reveal something personal. The picture is in fact of her dog, who apparently makes for a cute cuddle partner.

The Tweet comes fresh off the heels of Internet speculation that recently divorced Wilde is romantically involved with Bradley Cooper. In April, the House, M.D. starlet also Tweeted that despite rumors, she isn't dating Justin Timberlake.

On Saturday, at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in L.A., the actress said she finds speculation about her dating life amusing. "It is funny, actually," she told PEOPLE. "I have to laugh. I'm not dating anyone."

Still, there's always her pooch. "He is my only boyfriend," she said, laughing. "He's the only one that I need."  - Dahvi Shira

Emmylou Harris Runs 'Dog Rescue' Shelter in Backyard

Old folkies often use their music and celebrity to raise awareness for social issues. Through his annual Bridge School benefits, Neil Young supports children with severe speech and physical impairments, Willie Nelson's Farm Aid benefits America's farmers, Paul Simon's Children's Health Fund provides health care to America's under-served children, and 12-time Grammy Award-winner Emmylou Harris lends her considerable voice to those who can't who can't speak for themselves.

You might say her music is for the dogs.

Her latest disc, 'Hard Bargain,' features the track 'Big Black Dog.' On the surface, it's the most lighthearted cut on the album; it lopes along with the slobbering sincerity of a golden lab, but according to Harris the song deals with a serious subject.

"Even though it's a personal song about my dog Bella, and what an extraordinary creature she is, it's also an opportunity to talk about homeless dogs and, with any luck, galvanize people into taking action," she tells Spinner.

It's not just hot air. Harris is so sincere about the cause that she opens her home to stray and rescued dogs.

"I have a little dog rescue in my back yard," she says.

That "little" rescue is called Bonaparte's Retreat. Founded in 2004, and named after one of Harris' special canine companions, the retreat rescues dogs from high-kill shelters and finds them homes with foster families. It's a second chance for dogs slated for euthaniziation.

Through cooperation with community, the initiative has saved a number of dogs from an untimely death, but in America, where million of animals are euthanized each year, Harris realizes her efforts do little to solve the underlying problem.

"It's heartbreaking work, because you are aware at all time of the ones you can't save. But that can't stop you from saving the ones you can," she says. "It's a small drop in the bucket, but if we save one dog, it's something."

Like Bob Barker, the former host of the long-running television game show 'The Price is Right,' Harris never misses an opportunity to remind people to spay and neuter their pets.

But as long as people continue to drop off unwanted pets at the pound with the nonchalance reserved for returning an ill-fitting pair of jeans to a department store, perfectly healthy animals will be put to death. Harris feels the only way to stem the problem is through education and she's happy to beat the drum.

"People aren't evil, it's just that they are uneducated. It's really a tragedy that perfectly healthy animals are put down to make room for an endless supply of stray and unwanted pets. That's the
box that I am on and it's something I am very passionate about."

Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Winner Whoopi Goldberg Joins American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards(tm) as Celebrity Judge

Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy winner Whoopi Goldberg announced today that she will serve as a celebrity judge for American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards™, presented by CESAR® Canine Cuisine, in Hollywood. This nationwide search for America’s top dogs was created by the 134-year-old nonprofit to celebrate the powerful relationships between dogs and people; nominations are now underway at www.herodogawards.org.

“I believe in American Humane Association,” said Goldberg. “They are there for the animals, and it’s only about the real interest of the animals. When other groups scream for ‘animal rights’ just to get into the spotlight, this group doesn’t make a lot of noise — it just gets the job done. As long as I can remember, American Humane Association has been there (and that’s a long time!). I’m a fan.”

Goldberg has won a Grammy, two Emmys, two Golden Globes, a Tony and an Oscar — one of the few entertainers ever to have won all these awards. In addition, she received a British Academy Film Award and four People’s Choice Awards and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is also well-known for helping start Comic Relief in 1986 with Billy Crystal and Robin Williams to raise funds for homeless people.

“Whoopi Goldberg is no stranger to giving back, and she certainly knows a thing or two about awards,” said American Humane Association President and CEO Robin R. Ganzert, Ph.D. “We are extremely honored to have her serve as a celebrity judge for our inaugural Hero Dog Awards, which celebrate the special bond between people and animals — and the better world they create as a result of that relationship. Whoopi’s compassion, talent and joy for life reflect the essential nature of what American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards are all about.”
Hero Dogs may be nominated in eight categories at www.herodogawards.org: Law Enforcement and Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs, which includes pets. Nominations close on May 31, 2011, and voting by the general public will begin on June 1, 2011. Finalists in each category will be judged by a blue-ribbon panel consisting of both celebrities and animal experts, to determine the winning American Hero Dog. The winner will be announced at the first-ever American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards celebrity gala, presented by CESAR® Canine Cuisine, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Oct. 1, 2011.
